Blanketed / En blanc

After 3 days of snow we got a little break, even a few sun rays and headed out!

Elana built her first snowman. It w as a bit small because the snow was pretty dry, so after we finished it she said "Ok, Mom, make a big one now, big like this" showing me her papa...

She loves playing in the snow, but can never get up once she falls which happens a lot. She'll take 3 step and be on her bum (the snow does come up to her thighs) and say "Mom, I'm stuck, help me." So I help her up and we start all over again 3 steps later...

Happy New Year!

What a fabulous day New Years Eve was!
It started like a perfect day with a light snowfall which we enjoyed on our way to the Family Festival organized by Boston First Night. All afternoon we enjoyed mini performances by all kinds of talented individuals gathered for the occasion.
We saw extreme bike riders and trampoline acrobats, an amazing juggling show and a world festival of dances... Elana got her face painted and we battled our way to the craft table where she created a fantastic crown. She fully participated in the creative process and suddenly said: all done! It was a simple crown, but that was the way she wanted it. Taylor made one also and together they looked ready to party!

Our last show was Drum Central and Elana absolutely loved it! She was up and dancing drumming on her legs, the floor, in the air so happy to be there. It was a wonder to see.
She eventually grabbed my hand and brought me to the side of the stage a few minutes after they'd called for kids to come up and dance. Our little girl, at 2yrs old, was the only child who walked up on stage and took it all in! She did get a bit quieter once she got up there, I don't think she expected the sea of people she saw, but she made a few moves and never lost her cool! Yup, I was very proud of her.

She crashed while we enjoyed the grand procession and woke up in time for the ice skating show and then the fireworks. Dinner was in a great little restaurant in Chinatown - pretty quiet on NYE and a great find!

Elana stayed up pretty late, but we still got to enjoy the specialty chocolate we'd bought on the way home along with just as many adult beverages. A great way to welcome the new year. It was a splendid day!

Snow ball effect / Effet domino

Soooooooo, we are..... nope, not in San Diego, but back in Boston!
We got our 3am wake up call this morning right after we'd received en email notification that our flight had been delayed out of Manchester because the crew needed to rest. Boo.
Well, fine I don't want anyone falling asleep in the cockpit but did they really not know that a little earlier?!?!

Taylor was back on the phone within seconds but they kept dropping him. So we headed for the airport anyway. Few hours wait to find out they wouldn't be able to get us out the SD or Southern California for a couple of days. Boo again.
Just when we were about to head home a Virgin flight pops up out of Boston direct to LA. We grabbed that and T ran to try to get our car rental back and we drove home.

I am exhausted, haven't slept much the last 48 hours with Elana being sick and all the commotion going on. Poor Lana got sick all over her coat and blanket at the airport. She hasn't been herself in days and I feel horrible putting her through all this. What a trooper!

We all took naps and feel a bit better now. Onto laundry and some food to get us ready to leave again tonight.

Well I just thought I'd check our flight status, guess what? It is DELAYED! Shouldn't surprise anyone...

Well back to yesterday. Since were leaving from Manchester, NH, we decided to go see what is out there and drove up to Portsmouth. The wind was too strong for us to walk around but we had a great lunch at the Friendly Toast. Lana became friends with another little girl, Abby, and they walked around the restaurant looking at all the funky thing that were everywhere. Then she made her a drawing, it was very cute.

Portsmouth is a cute little town with tons of cafes and boutiques and sits on the 18mile stretch of coastal land that belongs to New Hampshire.

The only thing we saw of Manchester was the hotel and its pool in which Lana, and we, had a great time!

Besides all that we are doing great! And one way or another, we'll have a great Christmas...

First Snow storm / Notre première tempête de neige

This morning everything is white!
Since our flight to LA got cancelled because of the storm there was no hurry to get going and we decided to go check out that snow we'd been watching fall for the last 14hours. Elana loved this short pre-breakfast outing!

Then, once I'd started putting some thing together to make our vacation here fun, Taylor decided he'd do whatever it took to get us to California. He spent all day on the phone/internet and eventually got us on a Manchester-Philly-San Diego itinerary. We'll get our sun filled California vacation after all and get to discover a piece of New Hampshire at the same time since we are now leaving from Manchester, NH.

Late afternoon, once the stormed passed, we bundled up again, and walked down Commonwealth Avenue which looked beautiful with the trees all lit up and the freshly fallen snow.

Time to repack. Hard to believe we'll be in warm weather soon!

Funny little things / Le sourire au lèvres

Our angel's verbal abilities improve every day and, at times make us smile. Here are a few:

"It's kindafunny": She used to say this all the time for everything and anything until she understood better what it mean. It was "kindafunny" to see her go through that phase. But once she got it, it wasn't too interesting anymore for her and she moved on to other things.

Lately, she's discovered negations. If she is in the mood we'll get the never ending "I don't like..." chorus: "I don't like food, I don't like to nap, I don't like papa, I don't like my milk, I don't like, don't like, don't like...I don't like ice cream"
Silence, then
"I DO like ice cream"

We also have the tone of voice switch. Whenever she is whining for something we encourage her to use her big girl voice explaining to her that we really can't understand what she is saying when she cries. Within a millisecond she goes from being a whinny baby to a well-spoken little girl, even the attitude matches the voice.
It makes us smile.
Along those lines we also have the "No, please" whenever she doesn't wanna do something.

There are the cute ones that warm your heart like the spontaneous hugs where she tells us "I love you" or, lately, the "I am proud of you, Papa" when she thinks he's done a good job.

One of my favorites happens every weekday when Taylor gets ready to leave. He always give Elana a kiss and a hug before heading out the door. As soon as he's done she tells him: "A biiiiiig hug and a kiss for Mom too". Yes, I am beaming :-)

City lights / Lumieres de Noël

Stephanie and I walked along Comm Ave to go to the theater tonight. It was an enchanted walk among millions of Xmas lights strung on the trees lining the pathway. It made me feel special and put me in a very festive mood.

We saw "Up in the Air", can't really go wrong with George Clooney, right? Anyway, it was great to do something with a friend and as a friend. Though the cute message my husband sent me about Elana asking to "give mom a kiss" all night long made me want to run the rest of the way home so I could kiss her goodnight.
It's those simple moments that make motherhood the most wonderful thing of all. Well, especially if you just had some time to yourself ;-)

Today, Lana and I walked to the ice rink and saw Miss America 2009 - with a few extra layers of make-up to keep her warm I think - skate around the rink with Mickey and Minie.
Lana liked Mickey but enjoyed the ranger riding his horse around the park much better. She also likes to run after the many squirrels getting ready for winter. It cracks me up to see them so chubby! But it looks like winter is truly coming now so they may be right to prepare for it. The pond had a thin layer of ice on it and the geese were gone.

From November 2009

From November 2009

From November 2009

From November 2009

From November 2009

Donc un mois bien rempli! On a même eu l'occasion de sortir en couple et sommes allés voir le Blue Man Show. Excellent.

From November 2009

As always when December comes I have to ask where the last 11 months have gone...
November was full of colors and discoveries.
Vibrant sunsets and carpets of fallen leaves filled our minds with colorful images until spring returns next year.
From November 2009

Through a school friend of Taylor, we met some wonderful people at a home-made pasta dinner party. Stephanie and Myriem made us languinis and that pasta you are supposed to eat with pesto- if I remember well it's called trofie. It was an evening full of laughter and Elana was of course a bit hit! The whole gang is coming over to our house tonight for fondue.
From November 2009

We drove down to Plymouth in anticipation of Thanksgiving and to learn more about America's beginnings. It was a fun and educational day trip. I still wonder how over 100 people lived on the Mayflower for over two months on their way here.
From November 2009

My in-laws visited for Thanksgiving week and I think everyone had a nice time. I have to admit that I was quite happy with my Turkey day meal :-) Our kitchen being a one-man show I got to handle everything save the gravy - I learned not to get involved with that one. And I think it turned out pretty nice, yes even the gravy!
From November 2009

This year, we thought Elana was old enough to start understanding the magic of Christmas, so I've been taking her to all kinds of holiday activities. Once she got comfortable enough to sit on Santa's lap, but he's still a bit scary to her. Holiday lights, that's something we all enjoy.
From November 2009

So it was a busy month, and we even found time to get away on a date. We saw the Blue Man show which I recommend to everyone!

Beacon Hill

This morning with the laundry and some housecleaning done, I grabbed one of our Boston guidebooks and decided to head out to Beacon Hill with Elana.

From December 2009

We stopped by the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Beacon street. It honors the first all-black 54th regiment to enter the Civil War in 1863. They were led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the solders refused their pay for over 2 years when their pay rate was raised to match that of white soldiers.

Behind us glowed the Dome of the Massachusetts State House covered in 3"x3" 23K gold leaves. It needs to be recovered ever 25-30 years to keep its shine and was initially covered to keep the dome from leaking. The last layer cost $300,000.

From there we headed into the heart of Beacon Hill and discovered Acorn Street, the narrowest street of Boston. It looked really cute, but had an SUV parked right in the middle of it ruining any and all photo ops...

From December 2009

On Pinckney we saw what is believed to be the oldest standing house in Beacon Hill. Its wood facade looks tiny and very simple next to the grand brick buildings that surrounds it.

The only bright spot getting lots of natural light in the neighborhood (save top floor apartments!) is Louisburg square, the most prestigious address in Boston and home to Senator John Kerry.

From December 2009

We then wandered onto Holmes Alley through which many slaves escaped their slavehunter because it opens up at the end of a street that seem to be a dead end.

Back on the notorious Charles street, we stopped at Cafe Vanille for a treat and headed home through Public Gardens.

From December 2009

Beacon hill is an adorable historic neighborhood that has always been home to notorious families and whose north side became home to a growing community of free African Americans in the early 19th century and the center of the abolitionist movement. It is also considered an important stop on the Underground Railroad - a network of safe havens for runaway slaves.

It sits on a hill that becomes challenging when walking around with a stroller. Narrow cobbled streets made it difficult to stir the carriage efficiently! But I got a good workout out of it.

It's a beautiful neighborhood with much history, but I am glad we decided not to live there, with all the beauty its narrow streets lends it, it is still a pretty dark spot to live. But a great one to stroll through.

Here is your history lesson for the day :-)
From December 2009

From December 2009

>center>
From December 2009

From December 2009

Chips

Funny little thing that happened yesterday morning:

"Elana: Papa, I want chips!
Papa: Let's ask Mom what she wants for breakfast
Elana runs into the bedroom
Elana: Mom I want chips!
Taylor: Why don't we give Mom a couple of choices for breakfast? How about eggs or cereals?
Elana looks at him and things about it for 10-15 seconds then turns to me: Mom, do you want chips or cereals for breakfast?"

I call it adaptation and determination...

From November 2009

Entrelude comique d'hier matin:

Taylor: On voit donner quelques options à maman, d'accord?

City soundtrack / Music urbaine

I probably already mentioned the mad honking that you will encounter numerous time a day while walking through the city....
Driving rules are personalized to each driver leading to quite interesting interactions and pedestrians and motorists are ferocious opponents never willing to acknowledge their wrongdoing and often leading to heated exchanges...
And I won't tell you about the poor bikers

On the other hand Elana and I often stop under the many trees lining most streets and enjoy listening to the many birds chirping away. It's really always a surprise to hear so many of them!

And lately there has been the crunch of leaves. We like to walk down Commonwealth Ave which is currently covered with a thick carpet of colorful leaves great for all kinds of entertainment...

From November 2009
