From November 2009

From November 2009

From November 2009

From November 2009

From November 2009

Donc un mois bien rempli! On a même eu l'occasion de sortir en couple et sommes allés voir le Blue Man Show. Excellent.

From November 2009

As always when December comes I have to ask where the last 11 months have gone...
November was full of colors and discoveries.
Vibrant sunsets and carpets of fallen leaves filled our minds with colorful images until spring returns next year.
From November 2009

Through a school friend of Taylor, we met some wonderful people at a home-made pasta dinner party. Stephanie and Myriem made us languinis and that pasta you are supposed to eat with pesto- if I remember well it's called trofie. It was an evening full of laughter and Elana was of course a bit hit! The whole gang is coming over to our house tonight for fondue.
From November 2009

We drove down to Plymouth in anticipation of Thanksgiving and to learn more about America's beginnings. It was a fun and educational day trip. I still wonder how over 100 people lived on the Mayflower for over two months on their way here.
From November 2009

My in-laws visited for Thanksgiving week and I think everyone had a nice time. I have to admit that I was quite happy with my Turkey day meal :-) Our kitchen being a one-man show I got to handle everything save the gravy - I learned not to get involved with that one. And I think it turned out pretty nice, yes even the gravy!
From November 2009

This year, we thought Elana was old enough to start understanding the magic of Christmas, so I've been taking her to all kinds of holiday activities. Once she got comfortable enough to sit on Santa's lap, but he's still a bit scary to her. Holiday lights, that's something we all enjoy.
From November 2009

So it was a busy month, and we even found time to get away on a date. We saw the Blue Man show which I recommend to everyone!

Beacon Hill

This morning with the laundry and some housecleaning done, I grabbed one of our Boston guidebooks and decided to head out to Beacon Hill with Elana.

From December 2009

We stopped by the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Beacon street. It honors the first all-black 54th regiment to enter the Civil War in 1863. They were led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the solders refused their pay for over 2 years when their pay rate was raised to match that of white soldiers.

Behind us glowed the Dome of the Massachusetts State House covered in 3"x3" 23K gold leaves. It needs to be recovered ever 25-30 years to keep its shine and was initially covered to keep the dome from leaking. The last layer cost $300,000.

From there we headed into the heart of Beacon Hill and discovered Acorn Street, the narrowest street of Boston. It looked really cute, but had an SUV parked right in the middle of it ruining any and all photo ops...

From December 2009

On Pinckney we saw what is believed to be the oldest standing house in Beacon Hill. Its wood facade looks tiny and very simple next to the grand brick buildings that surrounds it.

The only bright spot getting lots of natural light in the neighborhood (save top floor apartments!) is Louisburg square, the most prestigious address in Boston and home to Senator John Kerry.

From December 2009

We then wandered onto Holmes Alley through which many slaves escaped their slavehunter because it opens up at the end of a street that seem to be a dead end.

Back on the notorious Charles street, we stopped at Cafe Vanille for a treat and headed home through Public Gardens.

From December 2009

Beacon hill is an adorable historic neighborhood that has always been home to notorious families and whose north side became home to a growing community of free African Americans in the early 19th century and the center of the abolitionist movement. It is also considered an important stop on the Underground Railroad - a network of safe havens for runaway slaves.

It sits on a hill that becomes challenging when walking around with a stroller. Narrow cobbled streets made it difficult to stir the carriage efficiently! But I got a good workout out of it.

It's a beautiful neighborhood with much history, but I am glad we decided not to live there, with all the beauty its narrow streets lends it, it is still a pretty dark spot to live. But a great one to stroll through.

Here is your history lesson for the day :-)
From December 2009

From December 2009

>center>
From December 2009

From December 2009

Chips

Funny little thing that happened yesterday morning:

"Elana: Papa, I want chips!
Papa: Let's ask Mom what she wants for breakfast
Elana runs into the bedroom
Elana: Mom I want chips!
Taylor: Why don't we give Mom a couple of choices for breakfast? How about eggs or cereals?
Elana looks at him and things about it for 10-15 seconds then turns to me: Mom, do you want chips or cereals for breakfast?"

I call it adaptation and determination...

From November 2009

Entrelude comique d'hier matin:

Taylor: On voit donner quelques options à maman, d'accord?

City soundtrack / Music urbaine

I probably already mentioned the mad honking that you will encounter numerous time a day while walking through the city....
Driving rules are personalized to each driver leading to quite interesting interactions and pedestrians and motorists are ferocious opponents never willing to acknowledge their wrongdoing and often leading to heated exchanges...
And I won't tell you about the poor bikers

On the other hand Elana and I often stop under the many trees lining most streets and enjoy listening to the many birds chirping away. It's really always a surprise to hear so many of them!

And lately there has been the crunch of leaves. We like to walk down Commonwealth Ave which is currently covered with a thick carpet of colorful leaves great for all kinds of entertainment...

From November 2009

I wish I'd written down and remembered more of Elana's funny moments but here are a few we enjoyed over the last week:

*Elana is learning to put her clothes on and something she's pretty good at is putting on her pants. Recently, she started pulling them as high as she can, covering her belly as well as possible, then looks up and says "just like grandma"... gets us everytime!

*The other night, Elana was in the bath showing us how she can lay on her belly and put her feet and legs up like superman. Since she was on her belly I asked her if she wanted to blow some bubbles. She looks at me, says yes and lets go some very bubbly gases!
I am not sure she realizes that she made bubbles that way, but Taylor and I were laughing so hard she tried as well she could to fart again in the tub!

*Last weekend we drove down to IKEA to get a shelve for Elana's room. While waiting in line I started to sing Elana's name to whatever melody came to mind. I was having fun and I was trying to distract Elana. She was looking at me with lots of focus so I thought I was doing pretty well until she turns to her Dad and says "what's Mom doing" with that I-think-she's-gone-crazy look in her face.

*Similarly that same weekend at dinner time I was explaining how I'd made dinner and Elana asks me "what are you doing Mom?" So I explain to her in French what I was doing. Obviously not getting it, she turns to Taylor and says again "What's Mom doing, Papa?"
From November 2009

Boston summer visit / Boston cet ete

From Boston visit, Summer 2009
;

I was kindly reminded that I never shared our fun vacay here in Bosont last August. It was a great week and we did tons of great things, but just like Elana loved becoming friends with Liobé and Maylis, I enjoyed reconnecting with my cousin, getting to know her husband and their beautiful daughters. It was a week of family times, talks, laughter, relaxation and genuinely shared good times.

From Boston visit, Summer 2009

Our first month in Boston / Notre premier mois a Boston

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

Big changes over the last month! I love walking around the city knowing I am never too far from home in case we start feeling fatigued. In many ways it reminds me of life in San Francisco, yet it is drastically different!
Our neighborhood is super cute with its brick buildings and all the big trees almost bare of all their leaves by now. We are almost settled, soon this will feel like home.

Elana has grown a lot over the last couple of weeks, but last weekend there were many moments when she looked much more like a baby than the toddler she is. She wasn't prepared to see all these people in costumes, especially adults and people wearing masks. And because she couldn't make sense of it she was scared.

From October 2009

We didn't get one smile from her while we were at the Connor's farm in Danvers! Then later she freaked out when a little boy dressed in all black with a scary mask climbed up the slide as she was ready to go down at Sparrow park. Poor thing never looked up after that.
From October 2009

It got better once she understood the "trick or treat" deal and realized she was getting chocolate if she asked nicely. It was very cute to watch her go from house to house.

Happiness was back on her face once we started playing with the leaves covering the sidewalks this time of the year. And I gotta say I enjoyed it too quite a bit :-)

The Berkshires

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

Since it was on everyone's to do list, we decided to go take a look at the forest and enjoy the last bit of fall foliage. We took a friends advise and drove out to the Berkshires in Eastern Massachusetts, closer than Vermont and just as pretty.

From October 2009

Despite a departure pushed back by 1/2 day after I broke and about ripped off the tip of my finger when trying to close a window that was jammed, we still made it in time to walk around Benedict Pond near Great Barrington. Elana loved the crunchy leaves and with her Dad jumped off every stone and tree root she came across. She's becoming pretty agile.

That night we had dinner at a lovely restaurant in Lenox wherewe got a special treat for dessert to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.

From October 2009

The weather on Sunday wasn't that great so we starting off with a scenic train ride out of Lee followed by a visite at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Rockwell is a local artist who got famous for his covers of the Saturday Evening post and his paintings depicting the American life.

From October 2009

We wrapped up the weekend with a visite to a Butterfly house where Elana had tons of fun and drove back along the Mohawk Trail in the snow!!!

From October 2009

Bit surprise then on Monday when temperatures climbed up in the 60's and mid 70's later this week!

We are slowly getting settled in Boston, boxes are disappearing one by one and we had our first meal at home and at a table last night:-)

Elana has become her Dad's personal translator. Whenever I talk to her in French when her Dad is home she'll turn to him and translate for him! Her Dad has become her favorite person in the whole world! She's got eyes only for him, so I feel a bit like a shadow at times... Good to see her develop a relationship with her Dad though, and really she's with me ALL day long, who wouldn't want a break?

Harvard vs. MIT / Harvard et MIT

Being that most every office I needed to get in touch with today was closed in observance of Columbus day I decided to pull out a guide book... And so we went to Cambridge

I now know the Harvard bridge is 364.4 smoots long plus one ear and understand why it was named the Harvard Bridge ;-)

On we went to walk around Harvard Square and the Harvard campus. Very preppy, very classic, very pretty, very studious very traditional...

From October 2009

Hopped back on the T to Kendall Square to see the other campus in town, MIT. Very modern, very avant-garde, very artistic, very open, very much not Harvard...

From October 2009

Met Taylor for lunch, walked over the bridge and along the river on our way back home.

Celebrated our anniversary with some special bubbly we found during wine tasting last week and delicious crab cakes and lobster cakes...

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

From October 2009

We found a place! Not an easy task, but after 30+ apartments seen we found something we hope will work out great for us! Great location in Back Bay, not too big, but big enough and with access to a roof terrace for those spectacular views> Book your stay, the Braun-Jones Inn is now open and and accepting reservations :-)

Boston is definitively a walking city and we've logged in quite a few miles since we got here, but everything still needs to be discovered...

This morning we walked to the SoWa open air market in lower South End and I discovered may great local merchents selling great products mostly made out of recycled material. There were Josephines colorful and affordable paintings, the button rings, gloves made out of old sweaters...

From October 2009

Elana has grown tremendously this past couple of weeks. She's now a toddler full of stories to tell and share, opinions to affirms and never ending requests. She gets dressed all by herself, is potty trained and outgrown her sippy cup. We still go spills here and there, but it's going great over all.

Lately, she started playing with her stuffed animals. She puts them to bed, one by one, covers them with a blanket and wishes them a good night then comes out and plays in the living room for a bit. Then she wakes them up slowly and brings them to the couch one by one talking to them softly the whole time. When they are all settled and in the right order she grabs a book, sits next to them and reads the book to her little friend. She'll even take them to the bathroom! There is something very motherly about the whole thing and its just adorable.

Her French is coming along. She knows more than I realize! And me? I'm much busier than I though I'd be without school or work. Days go by so fast I barely get to tackle the to do list
