Uncensored / De la bouche des enfants...

I wish I'd written down and remembered more of Elana's funny moments but here are a few we enjoyed over the last week:

*Elana is learning to put her clothes on and something she's pretty good at is putting on her pants. Recently, she started pulling them as high as she can, covering her belly as well as possible, then looks up and says "just like grandma"... gets us everytime!

*The other night, Elana was in the bath showing us how she can lay on her belly and put her feet and legs up like superman. Since she was on her belly I asked her if she wanted to blow some bubbles. She looks at me, says yes and lets go some very bubbly gases!
I am not sure she realizes that she made bubbles that way, but Taylor and I were laughing so hard she tried as well she could to fart again in the tub!

*Last weekend we drove down to IKEA to get a shelve for Elana's room. While waiting in line I started to sing Elana's name to whatever melody came to mind. I was having fun and I was trying to distract Elana. She was looking at me with lots of focus so I thought I was doing pretty well until she turns to her Dad and says "what's Mom doing" with that I-think-she's-gone-crazy look in her face.

*Similarly that same weekend at dinner time I was explaining how I'd made dinner and Elana asks me "what are you doing Mom?" So I explain to her in French what I was doing. Obviously not getting it, she turns to Taylor and says again "What's Mom doing, Papa?"

Avant que je les oublie, voilà qques histoires drôles de la semaine passée:

*Elana apprend à s'habiller toute seule et elle arrive à mettre ses pantalons assez facilement. Récemment elle a commencé à les monter aussi haut qu'elle peut pour recouvrir son ventre puis elle dit: "Comme grand-mama"... Ben oui, ça grand-maman de San Diego monte ses pantalons aussi :-)

*L'autre soir, Elana était dans son bain et faisait superman sur le ventre en levant les jambes et les bras hors de l'eau. Puisqu'elle était sur le ventre, je lui ai demandé si elle voulait soufler des bulles dans l'eau. Elle me regarde, me dit oui et lâche une série de pets dans... Je ne crois pas qu'elle se soit rendue compte qu'elle aie fait des bulles comme ça, mais on riait tellement avec Taylor qu'elle a essayé tant qu'elle pouvait de refaire un pet dans l'eau.

*Le weekend passé on était à IKEA et pour faire passer le temps je me suis mise à chantonner le nom d'Elana sur n'importequelle mélodie qui me venait à l'esprit. Je me disais que je m'en sortais pas mal car elle me regardait avec beaucoup de concentration. Tout d'un coup elle se tourne vers Taylor et lui dit "Elle fait quoi Maman?"avec un air de dire "elle est pas un peu dingue là?"

* Même histoire dimanche soir, j'expliquais ' Taylor ce que j'avais fais à manger quand Elana me demande "qu'est-ce-que tu fais maman?" Alors je lui explique en français ce que je suis en train de faire. Elle a apparement rien compris car, à-nouveau, elle se tourne vers Taylor et lui demande "Mais elle fait quoi Maman?"

I was kindly reminded that I never shared our fun vacay here in Bosont last August. It was a great week and we did tons of great things, but just like Elana loved becoming friends with Liobé and Maylis, I enjoyed reconnecting with my cousin, getting to know her husband and their beautiful daughters. It was a week of family times, talks, laughter, relaxation and genuinely shared good times.

On m'a gentillement rappelé que je n'avais pas encore partagé nos vacances estival a Boston en août. Ce fut une super semaine et on a fait plein de super trucs. Mais comme Elana qui en a profité pour construire une amitié avec Liobé et Maylis, ça m'a fait plaisir de reconnecter avec ma cousine, connaître un peu mieux son mari et passer du temps avec leur filles. Une semaine rempli de moment en famille, discussion, rire, relaxation et de bons moments partagés...

Our first month in Boston / Notre premier mois a Boston

Que de changements! J'adore pouvoir me promener à pied dans toute la ville en sachant qu'on est jamais trop loin pour rentrer si on commence à fatiguer. Ca ressemble un peu à San Francisco, mais en restant totallement different.
Notre quartier est très joli avec ces maisons de briques et les arbres qui ont bientôt perdu toutes leur feuilles. On sera bientôt installé, c'est donc presque notre nouvelle maison!

Elana a bien grandi ces temps, mais ce weekend elle était de nouveau toute petite. Pas préparé a voir tous ces gens porter des costumes, elle était effrayée par les adultes qu'elle ne reconnaisait pas et par les enfants qui portaient des costumes sombres, surtout ceux qui avaient des masques.

A la ferme Connors, on nous avons passe samedi matin, elle n'a pas décroché un sourire! Et puis la pauvre a été effrayé par un petit garçon habillé tout en noir qui remontait le tobogan quand elle voulait y descendre.
C'est allé mieux une fois qu'on a fait du porte-à-porte et qu'elle s'est rendue compte qu'elle pouvait avoir du chocolat, mais elle est tout de même resté assez tendue.

On a retrouve le vrai bonheur sur son visage quand on a commencé à jouer avec les feuilles mortes qui recouvrent les trottoirs. Moi aussi d'ailleurs j'ai beaucoup aimé :-)

Big changes over the last month! I love walking around the city knowing I am never too far from home in case we start feeling fatigued. In many ways it reminds me of life in San Francisco, yet it is drastically different!
Our neighborhood is super cute with its brick buildings and all the big trees almost bare of all their leaves by now. We are almost settled, soon this will feel like home.


Elana has grown a lot over the last couple of weeks, but last weekend there were many moments when she looked much more like a baby than the toddler she is. She wasn't prepared to see all these people in costumes, especially adults and people wearing masks. And because she couldn't make sense of it she was scared.

We didn't get one smile from her while we were at the Connor's farm in Danvers! Then later she freaked out when a little boy dressed in all black with a scary mask climbed up the slide as she was ready to go down at Sparrow park. Poor thing never looked up after that.

It got better once she understood the "trick or treat" deal and realized she was getting chocolate if she asked nicely. It was very cute to watch her go from house to house.

Happiness was back on her face once we started playing with the leaves covering the sidewalks this time of the year. And I gotta say I enjoyed it too quite a bit :-)

The Berkshires

Puisque tout le monde en parle, nous avons decidé d'aller nous promener dans les forêts du nord-est pour profiter des couleurs automnales. On nous a recommendé les Berkshires dans l'est du Massachusetts, plus pres et tout aussi joli que Vermont ou Connecticut. Et on a pa été déçu!

Malgré un départ repoussé d'une demie journée apres que je me sois cassé et a moitié arraché un doigt en essayant de fermer une fenêtre coincée, nous sommes arrivées en fin d'après-midi a l'étang Benedict pres de Great Barrington. Elana a beaucoup aime se promener dans la forêt, ecouter les feuilles mortes craquer sous ses pieds et sauter de toutes les pierres et racines d'arbre qu'on a croisé! Elle devient très agile.

Ce soir là on a mangé dans un petit resto sympa a Lenox. Il nous ont même gâté avec des jolis desserts pour célébrer notre première année de mariage.

Dimanche, le temps n'était pas super alors on a commencé par un tour un train a partir de Lee suivi d'une visite au musée Normal Rockwell, un peintre et illustrateur d'origine locale qui a eu un grand success avec ses couvertures de magazine pour le Saturday Evening Post et ses peintures de la vie americaine.

On a termine notre visite au papillorama de South Deerfield et sommes rentrés le long du Mohawk Trail sous la neige!!!

Grande surprise donc quand dès lundi les temperatures sont remontees jusqu'é 23 degree!

Nous nous installons gentillement à Boston, les cartons disparaissent petit à petit et nous avons pris notre premier repas à la maison et à table hier soir :-)

Elana est devenue la traductrice attitrée de son père. Quand je lui parle en françcais et que son papa est là, elle va tout lui traduire! Son papa pour lequel elle n'a que d'yeux. Je me retrouve donc un peu au deuxième plan... Ca fait plaisir de la voir developer une relation avec son papa, Et puis elle est avec moi toute la journee, alorsç$a nous fait une pause à toute les deux!

Since it was on everyone's to do list, we decided to go take a look at the forest and enjoy the last bit of fall foliage. We took a friends advise and drove out to the Berkshires in Eastern Massachusetts, closer than Vermont and just as pretty.

Despite a departure pushed back by 1/2 day after I broke and about ripped off the tip of my finger when trying to close a window that was jammed, we still made it in time to walk around Benedict Pond near Great Barrington. Elana loved the crunchy leaves and with her Dad jumped off every stone and tree root she came across. She's becoming pretty agile.

That night we had dinner at a lovely restaurant in Lenox wherewe got a special treat for dessert to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.

The weather on Sunday wasn't that great so we starting off with a scenic train ride out of Lee followed by a visite at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Rockwell is a local artist who got famous for his covers of the Saturday Evening post and his paintings depicting the American life.

We wrapped up the weekend with a visite to a Butterfly house where Elana had tons of fun and drove back along the Mohawk Trail in the snow!!!

Bit surprise then on Monday when temperatures climbed up in the 60's and mid 70's later this week!

We are slowly getting settled in Boston, boxes are disappearing one by one and we had our first meal at home and at a table last night:-)

Elana has become her Dad's personal translator. Whenever I talk to her in French when her Dad is home she'll turn to him and translate for him! Her Dad has become her favorite person in the whole world! She's got eyes only for him, so I feel a bit like a shadow at times... Good to see her develop a relationship with her Dad though, and really she's with me ALL day long, who wouldn't want a break?

Harvard vs. MIT / Harvard et MIT

Being that most every office I needed to get in touch with today was closed in observance of Columbus day I decided to pull out a guide book... And so we went to Cambridge

I now know the Harvard bridge is 364.4 smoots long plus one ear and understand why it was named the Harvard Bridge ;-)

On we went to walk around Harvard Square and the Harvard campus. Very preppy, very classic, very pretty, very studious very traditional...

Hopped back on the T to Kendall Square to see the other campus in town, MIT. Very modern, very avant-garde, very artistic, very open, very much not Harvard...

Met Taylor for lunch, walked over the bridge and along the river on our way back home.

Celebrated our anniversary with some special bubbly we found during wine tasting last week and delicious crab cakes and lobster cakes...

Puisque tout était ferme aujourd'hui, j'ai décidé de sortir mon livre de touristes! Nous sommes donc allées a Cambridge.

Je sais maintenant que le pont de Cambrdige mesure 364.4 Smoot et une oreille et sait pourquoi il s'appelle le pont de Harvard et pas MIT ;-)

Nous avons continué jusqu'à Harvard square ou l'on s'est promenée et découvert le campus de Harvard. C'est très classique, très joli, très traditionelle, très vert, tres universitaire...

On a rencontré Taylor et 2 de ses collegues a midi puis traversé le pont à pied pour rentrer le long de la rivière.

On a fêté notre premier anniversaire de mariage avec une bonne bouteille de champagne et des galettes de crabes et de homards...

Jumping in / On a fait le grand saut

On a trouve un apart! Ca a pas ete facile, mais apres plus de 30 visites on a trouve qquch qui devrait nous convenir. Bon emplacement, pas trop grand, mais pas trop petit non plus et avec acces a une terrace sur le toit! Faites vos reservation, l'auberge Braun-Jones est desormais ouverte :-)

Boston ca se fait a pied, on a donc deja fait plein de kilometre mais tout est encore a decouvrir. Je crois que ca va nous plaire!

Ce matin on est alle faire un tour a la foire pleine air de SoWa ou on a decouvert pleins de marchants sympa qui vendaient des produits qui pour la plupart etaient fait de materiaux recycles. J'ai bcp aime les peintures de Josephine, les bagues boutons et les gants fait de vieux pulls...

On a decouvert l'eglise de la croix sainte dans le bas du South End ou on c'est arrete pour manger qqch.

Elana grandi et change a une vitesse incroyable! Elle est devenue une petite fille qui a beaucoup de choses a raconter et a partager. Elle s'habille toute seule comme une grande et ne porte plus de pampers depuis notre rentree de Suisse. ON a aussi arreter les verres a couvert et meme si ca se renverse de temps en temps, ca se passe tout de meme tres bien.

Dernierement elle a commence a s'amuser avec ses animaux en peluches. Elle les mets au lit un a un avec des couvertures et leur souhaite une bonne nuit, vient jouer au salon puis va ler reveiler un peu plus tard. Un par un elle les amene tous sur le canape en leur parlant gentillement puis s'installe avec eux pour leur lire un livre. Elle est super gentille avec ses peluches, c'est comme une petite maman. Elle les emmene meme faire pipi!

Son francais vient gentillement, elle en connait plus que ce qu'on dirait!
Quand a moi, je suis epatee de me voir si occupee etant donner que je n'ai plus ni ecole ni boulot pour le moment! Les journees passent a vitesse grand V et y'a toujours a faire...

We found a place! Not an easy task, but after 30+ apartments seen we found something we hope will work out great for us! Great location in Back Bay, not too big, but big enough and with access to a roof terrace for those spectacular views> Book your stay, the Braun-Jones Inn is now open and and accepting reservations :-)

Boston is definitively a walking city and we've logged in quite a few miles since we got here, but everything still needs to be discovered...

This morning we walked to the SoWa open air market in lower South End and I discovered may great local merchents selling great products mostly made out of recycled material. There were Josephines colorful and affordable paintings,the button rings, gloves made out of old sweaters...

Elana has grown tremendously this past couple of weeks. She's now a toddler full of stories to tell and share, opinions to affirms and never ending requests. She gets dressed all by herself, is potty trained and outgrown her sippy cup. We still go spills here and there, but it's going great over all.

Lately, she started playing with her stuffed animals. She puts them to bed, one by one, covers them with a blanket and wishes them a good night then comes out and plays in the living room for a bit. Then she wakes them up slowly and brings them to the couch one by one talking to them softly the whole time. When they are all settled and in the right order she grabs a book, sits next to them and reads the book to her little friend. She'll even take them to the bathroom! There is something very motherly about the whole thing and its just adorable.

Her French is coming along. She knows more than I realize! And me? I'm much busier than I though I'd be without school or work. Days go by so fast I barely get to tackle the to do list

Grand Performances

No circus after all, but a great evening nonetheless. Taylor and I headed into downtown L.A. to check out a free performance of Kang Eun-Il performing the Haegum Plus at the California Plaza via Grand Performances On the menu: Italian, wine, dark chocolate and strawberries. Good start right?
California Plaza is a wonderful setting for a concert. We sat on the steps across from the stage and enjoyed the music as much as we did watching the children dancing in the gazebo.

Half a dozen children gathered on the gazebo in front of the stairs and created an energetic, eclectic yet harmonized choreography which provided additional entertainment for the better part of the concert.

Heagum is a two string instrument with a much bigger range that one would expect from such a simple looking instrument. They played a variety of compositions, including a tribute to Micheal Jackson.

But the best part of the night? The company of course!!

Finallement, pas de cirque, mais une tres bonne soiree tout de meme. Taylor et moi sommes descendu a Los Angeles pour ecouter un concert gratuit de Kang Eun-Il qui jouait le Haegum Plus a la place de Californie via Grand Performances une organization qui met sur pied des soirees culturelles.
Au menu: un bon plat italien, une bonne bouteilles, du chocolat bien noir et qques fraises. Ca commence bien non? De plus l'endroit est parfait pour ce genre d'evenement. Une petite place et qques plans d'eau au milieu des gratte-ciels de Los Angeles, On s'est trouver un petit coin sympa sur des escalies, De la, on a non seulement profite de la musique mais aussi des enfants qui, pour la duration du concert, se sont rassembles sous le gazebo et nous ont emerveille avec des danses interpretives toute aussi interessantes que le concert.

Le haegum est un instrument qui n'a pas l'air de grand chose mais qui est capable de sons enchanteurs. Nous avons beaucoup aime le melange harmonieux de musique traditionelle de Koree avec des influences d'autre part du monde (voir la video ci-dessus.) On a meme eu droit a une rendition de Michael Jackson!

Et le mieux de la soiree? La merveilleuse companie de mon mari...

Random Thoughts / Pensees pele-mele

I have officially become a permanent U.S. resident. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it felt like a bit of an accomplishment. I'm still wondering why the immigration officer had to announce the granting of my application in front of a hall full of individuals still waiting to hear about theirs, but hearing those words and knowing that it was now all behind was a bigger relief than I had anticipated.

So, now, when can I vote here?!?

Last week, daycare told us my baby is ready to transition to preschool. I was proud of her and excited yet I almost started crying (yes I still blame the over emotional self on new mom hormones.) She's gonna be a preschooler now, not 2 yrs old yet and already we're putting an era behind us. I guess I wasn't quite ready to leave babyhood...

Ben voila, je suis officiellement une residente permanente des USA. Difficile a decrires, mais ca prende un peu la forme d'un accomplissement. Bien que je me demande encore pourquoi l'officier m'a annonce devant la nouvelle devant une salle d'attente plein de gens qui attendait encore, j'avoue que de savoir qu'on peut mettre tout ca derriere nous maintenant, ca m'a fait beaucoup de bine!

Alors, maintenent a quand la citoyennete pour que je puisse voter!

La semaine derniere la creche nous a annonce qu'Elana etait prete a changer de classe. J'etait fiere et tres contente pour elle, mais en meme temps me suis presque mise a pleurer (oui, cette sesibilite est, a mon avis, toujours du a ces hormonoes de nouvelle mamane!) Meme pas 2 ans et deja a l'ecole; c'etait comme si une epoque ce terminait deja. Apparement c'est moi qui n'etait pas prete a quitter les jours bebe!

There weren't fireworks, or even firecrackers, no huge party or fondue pot... There was family, friends, laughter and lots of fun!

Nine of us paddled through the Marina, had a close encounter with a sea lion and managed to stay away from the big boats. Well, they seem to have more control over their huge vessel than we did ours so they steered clear of us.

We also watched partly out of sympathy, partly out of amusement (sad to say but likely true of all) this poor UCLA dude trying so hard not to capsize his mini boat over and over again. We left the scene before he seemed to have figured out how to get anywhere and truly hope he's not still sailing in circles...

On the way back, Taylor and I paddled as fast we could to catch up with Katie and Travis who'd taken quite an advantage on us, but while we did come close to catch up with them, they made it first to the docks.

Later we all headed to Chalet Edelweiss in Westchester, for what was supposed to be a very Swiss meal. Not exactly what I'd expected but great company, wine and reunions made the night a great one!

Il n'y a pas eu de feux d'artifices, d'enorme fete ou un gros caquelon de fondue... Mais des amis, plein de bons moments et de rire!

Lors de notre sortie en kayak, notre groupe a rencontre qques lions de mer avec qui on a essayer de recreer une chanson des Beattles. On a aussi reussi a eviter tous les bateau qui etait aussi de sortie. Ou plutot, ils on reussi a nous eviter puisque qu'il semble que malgre leur taille ils avait beaucoup plus de control sur leur direction que nos petits kayaks!

Bien que on a rencontre un pauvre petit bateau qui n'arretait pas de chavirer et de tourner en rond.. Mais comme il etait de UCLA et que nous etions tous de USC, on c'est pas trop fait de soucis.

En rentrant, Taylor et moi avons essayer de rattraper Katie et Travis qui avait pris passablement d'avance, mais malgre tous nos efforts, et bien qu'on les aies presque rattrape, ils sont tout de meme arriver les premiers!

Apres une bonne biere on s'est tous rendu au Chalet Edelweiss pour ce qui aurait du etre un repas tres helvetique. Un peu decue du buffet, mais les amis et bu bon vin on tout de meme creer une soiree memorable.

Our Thursday nights / Nos Jeudi soirs

Besides El Segundo, where else in LA can you shut down Main street for hours every week to set up Farmer's Market?

I love coming home on Thursdays, after getting Elana from daycare and, as we walk out the door, run into my wonderful, hot and sexy husband and make a family trip to the El Segundo evening Farmer's market on the other side of the park. When not another piece of flavorful fruit can fit in our bag we grab dinner at one of the food booth and eat it in the park.

Every week we do this I enjoy it a bit more.... The little pleasures



A part a El Segundo, ou peut-on, a Los Angeles, fermer la rue principal au voitures toutes les semaines pour un apres midi?

J'adore rentrer le jeudi apres avoir cherche Elana a la creche pour descendre au marche. En repartant, on tombe toujours sur mon merveilleux mari et on se rend de l'autre cote du parc pour le marche de soir. Quand le sac est plein on achete un plat chaud et on retourne au parc pour souper.

Chaque semaine, j'aprecie un peu plus notre routine du jeudi. Les petits plaisirs...
