Be green! / Soyons verts

From April 2010

Lime green and  baby pink and golden yellow and snow white and royal purple and tender lilac, and coral red and and and... I left a barely burgeoning city for 4 days and came back to spring in full bloom! Boston is gorgeous in the spring, trees heavy with soft, colored, delicate blooms create wonderland arches to stroll under while at their feet opens up familiar tulips, beautifully simple crocuses, happy daffodils, and busy hyacinths... It's a whole new city I rediscovered with joy...

From April 2010

Montreal

Another weekend, another adventure! Across the Northern Border this time to visit friends.

From April 2010

Elana and I took our time driving up to Montreal, stopping for lunch in the quaint town of Woodstock, VT and of course in Waterbury for a tour and tasting at the world famous Ben & Jerry Ice Cream! Yummy! More than 250,000 pints of ice cream get make everyday, quality control employee get a free annual gym membership and visitors get to taste new not yet available flavors before checking out the burial grounds, final resting grounds for the not so great flavors or those which didn't make economic sense anymore because, for instance, the demande for macademia nuts by B&J was so high it drove the price of the commodity through the roof which made it economically not possible to produce that flavor anymore.

After a fun evening spent catching up around a bottle of wine we got some well deserved rest and in the morning we were off for a visit and tasting at Intermiel, where honey and maple lovers will find every possible product enhanced with their favorite ingredient. We crossed the Deux-Montagnes Lake to have lunch in Hudson before heading over to L'Abbaye d'Oka for more local product tasting. We got some delicious Oka Cheese and didn't resist the local truffles and got some for dessert that night... You can only imagine the gourmet meal we had that night!

Off to Montreal the next day we met Viva, Ella and Bixente for coffee on the Plateau. It was so good to see them! It had been too long and I was delighted to see them so happy. Can't wait to see them again soon.

From April 2010

Floriane guided us through town, Park Mont Royal, Rue St.-Denis, Old Montreal, the Olympic Stadium...And the fun times that come with getting lost in a city with your friend!

One last night together reminiscing of our childhood and sharing liberating laughs before heading back to Boston where we hope to see her soon.

From April 2010

From April 2010

114th Boston Marathon

Lost in a crowd of 500,000 supporters, Elana and I marveled at the runners of the 114th Boston Marathon pouring into the city on their last mile to the finish line. We cheered the father pushing a wheel chair, got excited when the first women started to arrive, teared up when a Dad picked up his two daughters to run the last few hundreds yard with them to the finish line, got loud when military service men ran by in combat boots and their gear packed on their back... We chanted for the winners passing the finish line walking and peered into every face that ran by taking in the excitement, the pain, the smiles, the screams. Each one inspiring through their own motivation.

No I didn't take this picture, Winslow Townsen did, but that is how every one of them looked like they felt, at least on the inside. Inspiring...

Motivant...

A taste of summer / Un p'tit bout d'été

From April 2010

From April 2010

From April 2010

From April 2010

From April 2010

From April 2010

From April 2010

From April 2010

The Easter Bunny brought us to Washington D.C. for a very summery weekend!

After months of exchanging our adventures via email or phone it was nice to see Tita, who I barely knew back home and meet her husband. We were welcomed like old friends and Elana became best friends with Tita and fell in love with Matt almost instantly!

From April 2010

I started our visit at the subdued atmosphere of the Arlington National Cemetery, admired the magnolias and the beautiful trees in blooms, visited JFK's grave and discovered the D.C skyline from the Virginia hill. The explosion of spring full of life and colors presented an interest contrast to this somber memorial in honor of so many who died for their country.

From April 2010

We met up at Dupont Circle for a stroll along the beautiful mansions of Embassy row and had dinner at the resolutely French Bistrot du Coin where despite the anti-Swiss sentiment of the humorous host, we shared a great meal.

Though I knew museums to be free in D.C., it still felt strange to enter the zoo without a ticket! The highlight of our Sunday was walking through the blooming neighborhood of Kenwood where trees covered with millions of white flowers reached over the street to create an enchanted white tunnel from which petals continuously dance their way to the ground. Magical...

From April 2010

Once the weekend crowd subsided we headed down the the D.C Mall and the famous Japanese cherry trees lining Tidal Basin. Branches arch over the water letting visitors cool of in the shade and enjoy the beautiful sight.

From April 2010

Imagined by Pierre Charles L'Enfant, The Mall leaves you with a feeling of reverence for the American history: the monumental buildings of the Smithonians Institute, the many memorials to wars and the great men of the nation, Capitol Hill... I liked the Washington Monument, marked by the events of the Civil War when its construction was halted for about 25yrs. When construction resumed, stones from a different quarry were used which explains the color change about a third of the way up.

From April 2010

I loved to see it all at night, when the crowds are gone, and the monuments are tastefully lit while the city disappears in the dark.

From April 2010

And of course the White House! Had his predecessor still be there, I am not sure I would have had the same reaction, but after seeing Obama's motorcade pass by it was quite something to see his home...

Lots of history, tons of flowers, good food, shared laughs and good company. A great Easter weekend!

Time flies / Le temps passe vite

April has been a fun and busy month completely throwing me off my everyday writing resolution! It was well worth the fun though.

This past weekend was cold and wet but we spent it all together as a family and created our own sun rays. From our impromptu circus show -inspired by last week's circus show we attended - to Elana's first 3D movie -How to Train Your Dragon, which I recommend!- we had a great time all together.

Today, Patriots' Day, is also the Boston Marathon and all weekend the city buzzed with runners and preparations for he big event. We'll try to time head out and cheer the runners to the finish line in a few hours...

Elana's best morning line today: "Bye, have a good life Papa"

From April 2010

Black running tights, a dark grey body-hugging long-sleeve shirt, a bright yellow vest and a blue beanie, such is the uniform or the thousands of marathon runners who invaded the city for Monday's world renown race, the longest running marathon in the U.S.  Seeing them run in small packs through out town is inspiring, but today, coming back from an early morning grocery run, I was happy to hide in my weather proof and hooded, burnt orange rain coat, carrying in my reusable grocery tote the ingredients for a delicious zucchini sweet potato bread....

Spent from an indoor playdate with a neighbor we hunkered down for the afternoon, ready for books, tea and movies. Unexpectedly, Elana asked about Bello, the clown we saw at the Big Apple Circus earlier this week, and an uncontrollable desire to be make her day took me straight to my make-up bag. What I hadn't expected was how much fun I had getting ready!

Best moment of my day: Elana's look when she saw my face.

From April 2010

From Costa Rica Honeymoon

Sunday February 14, 2010:  a perfect Valentine's day

Our last day in Costa Rica! Ready for a last adventure, we met Eric and Kevin in the hotel lobby who were also going on the river rafting trip.

Alberto, our guide, was a well-traveled, super experienced and very funny man who competes on the Costa Rica National rafting team. He's been to Switzerland a few times while traveling to international rafting competitions and is currently rewriting the rafting guide manual. A very genuine and motivated guy who led us down the Pacuare river with a big smile, lots of great stories and many jokes.

I have been amazed at how much Costaricans know about their country. Everyone can tell you about the local fauna and flora, never hesitating on a name and always able to give an answer. They recognize the wildlife that surrounds them with expert eyes and not only know it but respect it.

Alberto was no exception. He did much more than guide us through class IV rapids, he shared his country with us. We paddled through 18 miles of wilderness, marveling at hidden waterfalls and canyons and excited like children when Alberto jumped off the raft to catch a poisonous bluejeans frog we admired with awe.
I was very happy when I sighted a toucan all by myself! Birds are the most difficult thing for me to find because they blend  so well in the trees. It was sitting pretty high in a tree showing off its banana like beak. We learned that because their beak is so heavy, toucans are poor fliers and hop, from tree to tree rather than fly long distances. They climb up to the top branches to be able to fly down to the next tree. And they do look quite funny in flight, wings flapping almost as fast as a hummingbird for a few seconds then keeping them close, looking more like a missile head until they reach their destination. I also saw a Scarlett Macaw; this one goes to Ron ;-)

We managed all of the rapids, though I almost fell out once! We swam in the river for a while to cool off. It was warm despite the steady light rain and though we were soaked when we got to the end we were as happy as can be! We shared a last celebratory beer before heading back to Turrialba and driving back to San Jose.

From Costa Rica Honeymoon

Saturday February 13, 2010

One last time we walked down to the beach for a morning workout. We didn't know that the couple who passed us running on the hill would be sitting at our breakfast table! We had a great meal with them and also met the owner of the hotel, Anita who's been in Costa Rica for the last 35years.

We drove further down the coast past Dominical to Dominicalito where we sat  under the cooling shade of the coconuttaking in the crashing waves and beautiful sight. On our way to Turrialba we stopped at Hacienda Baru, a smaller national park where we saw many morpho butterflies and some baby crocodiles chilling in a shallow river we crossed on our way to the beach.

From Costa Rica Honeymoon

Leaf-cutter ants had created an complex system of trails, cleaned of leaves and other objects that would slow down their progress while they carry back their loads to the anthill. They were mini trails we were careful to avoid stepping on.

Bromeliads grew on most of the trees we saw , and we discovered a tree that grew 2inch high thorns to protect itself!

From Costa Rica Honeymoon

Back in the car, we headed up the mountain in what quicly became the thickest fog I've driven into! The 2 hour trip took almost twice as long and we were pretty happy to arrive in Tirrualba!

Samedi 13 Fevrier 2010

From Costa Rica Honeymoon

From Costa Rica Honeymoon

Manuel Antonio

Friday February 12, 2010

Howler monkeys! They carry their name well. Before daybreak we could hear them socialize in the forest. I wasn't quite sure they were monkeys because they sound a bit like a large pack of big dogs with rough voices. But howler monkeys they were. We saw them jumping from branch to branch towards the large leafless tree in front of our room. Unbelievable. We watched them chill and take in the day or hop around using their tail as a stabilizer. We also saw hummingbirds coming to our windows to drink rainwater from the nearby leaves. It rained hard last night; and it was fantastic to be in our room, protected by just a roof but otherwise open to the elements and still sleeping in a comfortable bed, I loved it!

We walked down to the beach before breakfast, skinny dipping and surfing in the golden morning waves, gorgeous! Back to our room we saw even more monkeys in our tree. Fun!

Buena Vista is a great place to stay, our host is the definition of hospitality and makes a great breakfast too. She welcomes guests into her home for meals  and the view from there is absolutely gorgeous.
We got attacked not by monkeys but by very aggressive guide companies as soon as we arrived at Manuel Antonio Parque Nacional, but we decided to discover the park on our own. At first we leeched onto guided groups when they stopped to look at something but when we got to Playa Manuel Antonio we decided to take the less traveled path around Punta Catedral from wich we saw spectacular views of the bay and many white faced monkeys, a kingajou, a Common Baslilisk (also called Jesus Christ lizard because it "walks" on water) about 1.5 foot long, iguanas and sloths sleeping the day away in their trees.
We spent the afternoon reading and hopping in the water at playa Manuel Antonio, and watching hermit crabs climbing up and down the mini sand dunes. After lunch, I was startled by two racoons about 2 feet away from our towels, one of which set on getting whatever was edible out of our backpack and a paw already in its side pocket. I barely got the bag away! Not the least scared they walked on to the next people on the beach! Much bigger than their North American counterpart, they are also super cute with their bandit look and striped tail.

There was also the white-faced capuchin (monkey) who climbed the coconut tree next to us and started throwing coconuts on the French family sitting nearby. Or his friends, not the least afraid, running right past me, barely a few inches away. We saw lots and lots of monkey! We even spotted some birds (not our forte) and a agoutis.
Manuel Antonio is a beautiful place with white sand beaches and quiet waters perfect for a swim. Costa Rica is a place full of the songs of birds, each unique and creating a wonderful symphony...
